Is Matt LaFleur Really on the Hot Seat?

Is Matt LaFleur Really on the Hot Seat?

How We Got Here

A month ago this would’ve sounded crazy. Matt LaFleur signed an extension in January, and team president Ed Policy basically laughed off the idea that his job was in any danger. Then Thursday happened. Losing 35-14 at home to a Falcons team that hadn’t won a game yet was bad enough, but it’s the bigger picture that has people talking. LaFleur has now won just one of his last eight regular season games, going back to last year’s five game losing streak to close the season, which included two blown leads against the Bears.

The Case for Patience

Here’s the thing though. LaFleur’s career record is 77-42-1, which is better than almost every coach currently in the league, and he’s taken this team to the playoffs in six of his seven seasons. It’s also fair to point out what he’s working with right now. No Josh Jacobs, no Micah Parsons, and a banged up offensive line is a lot to overcome. Nobody’s getting fired after Week 3, but if the next few games look like the last one, the questions are only going to get louder. Right now, the most important thing he can do is win in Tampa.
